<p>If we take the time to look deeply into our own hearts and lives, we recognize that in different ways we are all broken people, desperately in need of rescue and wholeness.</p>
<p>As Christians, we have a message of hope to share—Jesus Christ has come to redeem us from this dark and broken world! He is very much alive today, working to heal our lives, while we look ahead with anticipation to a coming day when there will be no more sorrow, death, or tears.</p>
<p>But while we wait, perhaps it’s worth considering: does my life hurt or help those around me? Do my words and actions reflect the love of my Savior and lead others closer to Him?</p>
<p>The gospels present the familiar story of Christ’s feeding a multitude with a few loaves of bread and a couple fish. It’s the only miracle of Jesus—aside from the resurrection—that’s recorded in all four gospels, each presenting distinct details which add to the story.</p>
<p>In<a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+6%3A5-12&amp;version=NIV" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <u>John’s gospel</u></a>, Andrew offers a solution to feeding the multitude: bring Jesus a boy with his lunch. When put into Jesus’ hands, the boy’s five loaves of bread and two fish (clearly inadequate to feed upwards of 5,000 people), end up feeding the entire crowd.</p>
<p>In Matthew 25, our Lord speaks of a coming day:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?</em><em> </em><em>When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?</em><em> </em><em>When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’</em></p>
<p><em>The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (verses 37-40)</em></p></blockquote>
<p>This passage speaks of relationship and service—to all who are in need, including the followers of Jesus who will at times suffer.</p>
<p>Those who are not suffering will be judged on their willingness to lovingly serve those who are. When they do, it is as if they serve Jesus Himself!</p>
<p>When we see the lost, the poor, the hurting, how will we respond?</p>
<p>Do I sometimes turn away from those with need, thinking it is too great for me to help?</p>
<p>Like the boy’s simple lunch: whatever I have to give, and however small—a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, a phone call, a prayer—when given to Jesus, allows Him to multiply the blessings and do the work that I cannot.</p>

<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Who doesn’t appreciate the blessings of kindnesses such as these?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Have you ever considered why kindness matters?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><strong>God showed His kindness to us</strong></span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">“That in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.” (Ephesians 2:7)</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><strong>God wants us to be kind</strong></span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">“And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32)</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><strong>Kindness shines your light and gives God the glory</strong></span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><strong>Our demonstration of kindness shows God’s love and opens the door to lead others to Him</strong></span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">“Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?” (Romans 2:4)</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">In a self-centered world, simple acts of kindness are refreshing, bringing joy to the receiver and the giver:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright wp-image-2140" src="https://www.cherylelton.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Helping-Others-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="338" height="225" />A warm smile.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Holding the door for someone.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Remembering a birthday.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">A quick call or text to let someone know you care.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Unexpected flowers.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">“What can I do to help?”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Kindness is a <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=galatians+5%3A22-23&amp;version=NKJV" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fruit of the Spirit</a>, developed through intentional effort to think of <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=philippians+2%3A3-4&amp;version=NKJV" target="_blank" rel="noopener">others more than ourselves</a>.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">I looked at him in stunned silence . . .</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">His words felt like someone trying to pick at the scar and re-open a wound from long ago.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">“You remember that?” I finally said.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">“Of course,” he replied. “We all knew you were the top Spanish student senior year, yet I never understood why the award went to someone else.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">I could only shake my head in disbelief and smile.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1833" src="https://www.cherylelton.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/DadMe2012-300x225.jpeg" alt="Father Daughter Visiting" width="300" height="225" /></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">If only I’d heard those words 30 years ago! </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">How it would have tempered my disappointment and affirmed all my hard work. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">But the award ceremony came and went and nothing was ever spoken.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Failing to speak the good we are thinking can sometimes wound as deeply as words carelessly spoken.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Proverbs 18:21 tells us <em>“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”</em></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Words are powerful.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">They can convey negatives on the road to death—pain, offense, dejection, depression, annoyance, rage, etc. . . .</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">. . . or, our words can impart life—inspire, encourage, motivate, embolden, heal, restore, and so on.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">As Christians, our words should reflect the message of Christ and add value to conversation, building up rather than tearing down.</span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may <strong>impart grace to the hearers</strong>.” (Ephesians 4:29) </span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Our words can dispense grace to the hearers!</span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">“<strong>Let</strong><strong> your speech always </strong><strong>be</strong><strong> with grace, seasoned with salt</strong>, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” (Colossians 4:6)</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><a href="https://www.cherylelton.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/1-salt-wavebreakmedia_thinkstock-copy.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1832" src="https://www.cherylelton.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/1-salt-wavebreakmedia_thinkstock-copy-300x194.jpg" alt="Salting Food " width="300" height="194" /></a>Salt has long been used to preserve and flavor food. It makes what we eat wholesome and palatable.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Likewise with our conversation . . .</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Like putting salt on our food, our talk should be seasoned with good, gracious words, making conversation more appetizing and flavorful.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Without “salting” our words, they are subject to being unprofitable and injurious, like meat left untreated, spoils.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">So don’t hold back!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Remember the words from Berton Braley’s poem “Do It Now”:</span><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><em> </em></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><em>“If you think some praise is due him now&#8217;s the time to slip it to him,<br />
For he cannot read his tombstone when he&#8217;s dead.”</em></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Is there someone you can bless today with kind and encouraging words?</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">In doing so, our whole outlook on life changes. His thoughts become our thoughts. His actions become our actions. His purposes become our own.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">We become more Christ-like.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">No longer living by the old sinful nature, we now live by the Spirit, and in doing so, we bear fruit.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Fruit is mentioned many times in the Bible, both literally and figuratively. The concept of bearing fruit is used often.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Fruit, as the result of work or activity, can be either good or bad. And just as with literal fruit, no fruit grows until seeds are planted.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Likewise for us: the fruit evidenced in our lives grows from what we allow to take root in our hearts.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=galatians%205%3A16-25&amp;version=NLT" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Galatians 5:16-25</a> contrasts the fruit of our old sinful nature with the fruit of the Spirit—our new nature in Christ—and what it looks like to be directed by or live by each. The section concludes:<em> </em></span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,<strong> </strong>gentleness, and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23)</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Interestingly, the Greek word for “fruit” (<em>karpós</em>) is in the singular, indicating there is one fruit with nine attributes, or characteristics.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Like a bowl filled with various kinds of fruit—strawberries, apples, pears, grapes, etc.—yet together referred to as a single bowl of fruit.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">By definition, <em>karpós<a href="#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1"><strong>[1]</strong></a></em>, used figuratively, results from the joining of two life-streams—the Lord living His life through ours—to yield what is eternal. In this usage, it implies that everything is done in true partnership with Christ.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">What an awesome reality!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">As we learn to partner with Christ and live in His presence, the Spirit helps us practice the same <strong>love</strong> Jesus had when He laid down His life for us.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The<strong> joy</strong> Jesus experienced begins to fill our hearts.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The same <strong>peace</strong> that guarded Jesus’ heart, even as He endured the cross, protects ours.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The kind of <strong>patience</strong> Jesus showed to Peter works in us.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The <strong>kindness</strong> Jesus showed to the woman taken in adultery starts to soften our hearts toward others.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The Father’s <strong>goodness</strong> that Jesus showed others, the Spirit now works in us.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The same <strong>faithfulness</strong> that caused Jesus to always seek and obey the Father is built into our hearts.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The <strong>gentleness</strong> Jesus showed to children wells up within us.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The <strong>self-control</strong> Jesus exhibited by always doing the Father’s will, the Spirit now grows in us, so we may resist temptation and do what is right.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Like fruit ripening on the vine, all fruit of the Spirit is grown as we cultivate a close love relationship with the Master.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Throughout our lives, we grow in displaying Christ to the world around us through the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control God develops in us.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The Holy Spirit guides this process—growing this wonderful spiritual fruit in us—transforming us toward full maturation in Christ.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><a href="#_ftnref1" name="_ftn1">[1]</a> </span><em><span style="font-size: 10pt;">See Strong’s 2590</span></em></p>
<p><em><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Part 2 will explore more on how to grow spiritual fruit in our lives and its purpose.</span></em></p>
